Conținut

This activity invites youth workers and managers to discover what is needed to build a strong and future-proof digital foundation for using Virtual Reality (VR).

You will learn how to establish shared agreements that ensure a positive, safe, and professional deployment of technology within youth work.

What is youth work?

Youth workers provide low-threshold support to young people during their transition to adulthood. They achieve this by connecting, identifying needs, motivating, educating, and activating. To do so, youth workers collaborate with various partners, including parents, schools, youth care, neighbourhood teams, and the police. As the world of young people becomes increasingly digital, the presence of youth workers in the digital sphere is an absolute necessity.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that transports you to a fully digital world. By wearing a VR headset, your senses are stimulated in a way that makes it feel as though you are truly elsewhere. Whether it is a meeting space with peers from other countries (social VR) or an educational experience regarding human rights: in VR, the possibilities are boundless.

The bridge to youth work

VR is a powerful tool for youth workers to achieve their core objectives. This activity aligns with Competence Area 2 of the Digital Competence Check for digital youth work (SNAC Framework):
  • The availability and use of shared guidelines (C2.1).
  • Creating reliable knowledge through digital means (C2.2).
  • Using digital tools to share ideas and experiences with colleagues (C2.3).

Additionally, you will work on:
  • Connecting: Meeting young people in their digital environment where the threshold for conversation is often lower.
  • Motivating and activating: Using immersive experiences to inspire young people and discover their talents.
  • Educating and identifying: VR provides a safe setting to practice difficult situations, allowing the youth worker to respond directly to interactions within the virtual space.

Download the appendix: safe together in VR

To support you in the delivery, we have bundled all agreements into one handy overview. This appendix contains our shared principles for a positive and safe VR experience, including the ‘safer space’ promises and practical protocols for hygiene and technology. Use this document as a checklist when preparing your sessions, display it in your youth centre, or share it with your team to ensure everyone operates from the same vision. Together, we build a professional and uniform digital approach.

Take action: choose your role!

Within the VR Workshop Team, we collaborate to create a strong digital offer. Choose the role that fits you and complete the corresponding task to claim your badge.

For the youth worker: The facilitator You bring theory into practice.
  • Your task: Set up a VR session according to the guidelines. Focus on the ‘safer space’ promises and guide the young people during their first experience. Lead the discussion at the ‘reflection table’ afterwards.
  • Claim the badge: VR Youth Work Facilitator.

For the manager: The strategic builder You create the conditions for success.
  • Your task: Assess the organisation’s digital infrastructure. Ensure central accounts are in place, a hygiene protocol is ready, and that the team is supported in issuing Open Badges.
  • Claim the badge: Strategic Digital Innovation Manager.

For the young person: The co-builder Your voice and experience are the keys to a successful offer.
  • Your task: Help monitor the ‘safer space’ in VR. Provide feedback on the chosen apps and contribute ideas on how to keep the virtual world positive and accessible for everyone.
  • Claim the badge: VR Community Builder.

Finished this activity? Seize the moment and take the following steps to continue your development:

  1. Reflect: In two weeks, review your progress. Identify what is working well and where you can sharpen your approach.
  2. Next Module: Head over to the activity 'Where Are You Now? Understanding Your Digital Competencies'. Here, you will learn how to measure your digital skills against real-life experiences.
  3. Share your success: Earned a badge? Post it to your profile and inspire colleagues across the network to start their own journey with VR or digital youth work!
