Digital belonging detective

Awarded to young people for successfully working on one of the tasks in the Digital belonging detective badge and exploring what it takes to build a truly welcoming and transformative culture in youth work, especially in our digital spaces!

Skills and experiences gained
This badge aligns with DigComp 2.2 (Digital Competence Framework for Citizens) and supports the development of:
  • Communication and Collaboration - Interacting through digital technologies: In the "Vibe check & Culture dive" and "Digital belonging scenarios" tasks, where you discuss, share ideas, and analyse online interactions.
  • Problem Solving - Identifying needs and technological responses: Especially in the "Digital belonging scenarios" where you identify problems (needs) and brainstorm solutions that a "broad-minded and transformational culture" entails. This includes devising both technological and non-technological approaches to foster digital inclusion.
  • Safety - Protecting health and well-being: This is directly linked to the "digital well-being" aspect in the "Young people as digital influencers" task. It's about you learning how to support themselves and others in dealing with the impact of digital media on their well-being, including taking digital breaks and promoting healthy online habits.

Goal: Understand what makes a youth group's "working culture" strong and welcoming, and share your ideas on how to create a sense of belonging for everyone.
Steps you need to take:
1. Join the "Vibe Check" discussion:
  • Think about our youth group/center/online space. What's the overall feeling or "vibe" when we're together? Is it fun, supportive, sometimes a bit quiet, loud, creative?
  • Share one word or a short phrase that describes this vibe with the group.
2. Define "Broad-minded" and "Transformational" in your own words:
  • Listen to the explanations of "broad-minded" (open to new ideas, welcoming) and "transformational" (leading to positive change).
  • Try to explain what these words mean to you in a sentence or two. How do they relate to our youth group?
3. Share a "Belonging Moment":
  • Think about a time you felt like you truly belonged somewhere – it could be in this youth group, a sports team, a family gathering, or with friends.
  • Briefly share what made you feel that way in that moment.

Goal: Act as a "Digital belonging detective" by analysing scenarios related to online interaction, inclusion, and well-being in youth spaces. You'll identify challenges and brainstorm how a broad-minded and transformational culture can offer solutions.
Steps you need to take:
1. Listen to the scenarios:
Pay close attention as your facilitator (or group leader) shares different situations or "scenarios" about how young people interact in online youth spaces (like Discord, gaming groups, or online project platforms).
2. Become a detective (individually or in a small group):
  • Choose one of the provided scenarios (e.g., "The Discord Debate," "The Awesome Online Project," "Digital Well-being Woes") or discuss one you've experienced yourself.
  • Identify the Challenge: What's the main problem or difficulty in this scenario? How might it make someone feel left out or unwelcome?
  • Brainstorm Broad-minded Solutions: How could being open to new ideas, different ways of doing things, and welcoming everyone help solve this problem?
  • Think Transformational Actions: What specific changes could be made (or started) that would lead to a positive improvement in this situation?
3. Share your detective findings:
  • Present your group's (or your own) analysis of the scenario.
  • Clearly explain the challenge you identified and the solutions you brainstormed, focusing on how a broad-minded and transformational culture would make a difference.
  • Be ready to discuss and listen to ideas from other groups.
